Jordan’s send off by InDesign

Last week we decided to design a funky login guide rather than using the boring “Times New Roman” font we thought we’d mix it up! Using InDesign we started out with just four plain, ordinary sections of text which slowly transformed into something special. Through manipulating different fonts, changing the size, spacing, orientation then adding colour and a dotted border we created what looked something like a logo at first which then evolved into a pseudo football or rocket looking design.

Paying close attention to integrating all the visual elements together, finessing the spacing and making sure all related text aligned visually and most importantly assuring we didn’t get too carried away and make something stylish but illegible…it’s hard to find the balance between function and form. The final result turned out quite well and was ready for laminating…possibly becoming mouse pads.

Making some stop motion commotion

today we had some awesome fun at VINYL we decided to create some stop motion magic. We made a round robin style collaborative video each one of us taking several frames and then passing it on to the next person. This was a great exercise and made for an entertaining cinematic experience; we had all kinds of materials thrown into the mix from dinosaurs and stuffed toys all the way through to hand drawn sketches.

The Mysteries of Photoshop Revealed

For the last three weeks the Visionary Images studio has been visited by students from The Island school in Coburg.

The first workshop saw Kalani, Lauren and Emily taking a photograph of themselves and converting it in photoshop into a stencil (see previous posts for details of our preparations for this workshop).

In the second workshop we took photographs to then create a photo-collage of figures.

This week VINYL participants Sean and Jordan test ran the next tutorial, Photo Manipulation, while Emily, Kalani and Adam from The Island finished their projects from the previous weeks.

Slideshow Images are by taken by Kalani, Emily and Sarah.

What happens if you don’t put bridges in your stencil design

Remember to add the bridges or your stencil will fall apart!

We took these photos today as a way to explain what happens when a stencil doesn’t have bridges. It is a hard concept to explain just in writing.

Thank you Thu-Ha for the original artwork. Thu-Ha’s original design had bridges but was one of the most challenging stencils to create because of the glasses.

Experimentation with stencil art today, Photoshop is not my forte but a step by step instruction helped me create this image stencil of my portrait. Beginning with a photograph and playing with saturation, brightness and contrast, this is the end result. Here is Deanne’s example. We are preparing this as a workshop for new participants.

Hello, my name is Laura. A new year, a new awakening; this is my first day with Visionary Images.

My experiences of the art world have not stepped upon subject matters as raw but also as heartfelt of the work of VI. While I am familiar with different materials and techniques particularly in the field of conceptual art practices, the discussion of youth mental health is a topic I am yet to explore.
